Statement on the use of medicines containing paracetamol during pregnancy

The benefit-risk balance continues to remain positive

Swissmedic notes that the US government suspects that there may be a link between the administration of paracetamol during pregnancy and the occurrence of autism in children.

Several medicines containing paracetamol as the active ingredient have been available in Switzerland for many years. The authorised indications are the treatment of pain and fever, including during pregnancy if necessary.

Swissmedic stresses that, in the many years since it was first authorised, no scientific evidence has emerged of any link between the administration of paracetamol in pregnancy and autism in children. This assessment is consistent with the evaluations of other regulatory authorities worldwide and the opinions of the medical community. The benefit-risk balance for these medicines continues to remain positive. By contrast, therapeutic alternatives, especially for pregnant women, may be less suitable.

One thing is clear: when taking any medication, the package leaflet and, during pregnancy, the corresponding section on "Pregnancy and breast-feeding" in particular, must always be observed. Swissmedic also recommends consulting a doctor or pharmacist for any further individual advice that may be required.
