Swissmedic joins the Management Committee of the IMDRF

Swissmedic's appointment to the Management Committee of the IMDRF strengthens international cooperation and supports efficient regulation in Switzerland

03.04.2025

Swissmedic has been accepted as a member of the Management Committee (MC) of the International Medical Device Regulators Forum (IMDRF). The decision was made on 14 March 2025 at the 27th IMDRF meeting in Tokyo, Japan. The IMDRF is an international platform composed of regulatory authorities from around the world. Their common goal is to promote harmonisation and cooperation in regulatory matters relating to medical devices.

Important step for Swissmedic and international cooperation

Swissmedic has been actively involved in international harmonisation work for many years. Since 2021, experts from the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products have been contributing their knowledge in various working groups. At Swissmedic's request, the agency was granted the status of Official Observer in the Management Committee in March 2023. With its admission as a Management Committee member, Swissmedic is now directly involved in the IMDRF’s strategic decision-making processes. This not only strengthens international cooperation, but also Switzerland's role in the global regulation of medical devices.

Significance for Switzerland and the medical device industry

IMDRF membership enables Swissmedic to play an even more active role in shaping the international regulatory landscape. This benefits both authorities and economic operators, as increased harmonisation of rules leads to a reduction in regulatory work and improved international recognition. Swissmedic will also continue to contribute its expertise and advocate for efficient, transparent and risk-based regulation of medical devices.
