29.06.2018

Risks of Osurnia ad us. vet., an ear gel authorised for use in dogs: in both humans and dogs, coming into contact with eyes can result in eye irritation, redness of the eye and in very rare cases corneal ulcers.

Following use of the veterinary medicinal product Osurnia ad us.vet. (Swissmedic authorisation no. 65,151), an ear gel for dogs, two cases of corneal ulcers in people have been reported in the USA. Other symptoms reported in humans include eye irritation, conjunctivitis, redness, burning, stinging and itchiness.

The accidental eye contact with people present or with the animal being treated occurred during or immediately after application to the ear, for instance through the dog shaking its ear.

Care should therefore be taken to ensure that no droplets from the
Osurnia ear gel come into contact with the eyes of people, dogs or other
animals.

It is advisable to restrain the dog's head during administration so that the dog does not shake its head and splash the medicine around.

If accidental ocular exposure occurs, the eyes should be flushed thoroughly with water for 10 to 15 minutes and a medical professional consulted.
