Medical face masks are Class I medical devices and as such are subject to the surveillance by Swissmedic. In connection with preventive market surveillance, Swissmedic has reminded the 20 top-selling Swiss retailers in September 2020 of the legislation governing the supply of medical face masks to the public. In addition to the stationary trade, numerous web stores were also taken into account. At the same time, Swissmedic informed other external stakeholders - including national professional associations - by means of a separate information letter about the legal requirements when supplying medical face masks.
