Herbal substances and preparations

Since the revised foodstuffs law came into force on 1 May 2017 and the changeover from the “positive principle” to the “negative principle”, the “Classification of herbal substances and preparations as animal feed or veterinary medicinal products” list is no longer applicable and has therefore been removed from the internet. Products are assessed on a case-by-case basis, taking account of all their properties. The presence of a particular plant is merely taken as an indication and does not generally constitute sufficient grounds for classification. Plant-based preparations intended for medical use will continue to be regarded as medicinal products requiring authorisation, and plant-based foodstuffs are subject to the revised foodstuffs legislation. The Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office is responsible for questions relating to foodstuffs legislation.
